Continuing with The Tip List, we take a look at what many have called one of the best movies of all time, Sixteen Candles and
Movie Number 3: Sixteen Candles
My initial thoughts on this movie were: is this the one where John Cusack held the boom box over his head... I was wrong. John Cusack IS in this movie, but its more of a nerd who I still cannot define the character of. Is this how nerds acted in the 80's? No wonder they got beat up!
Never the less, Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall of the "Brat Pack" (Great Documentary) are together again following my viewing of The Breakfast Club. Molly Ringwald plays an eerily similar character as she did in The Breakfast Club, but this time it's her 16th birthday and wouldn't you know... her family completely forgot due to her sister's wedding. Cliche much??
The movie started off slow and whiney to me, but towards the middle point became a little fun. It seemed as though the story of Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) and Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) didn't really have enough meat on the bone so we were introduced to the love life of Long Duck Dong and a kid I now know as Farmer Ted (Anthony Michael Hall).
Watching "Geek" attempt to get into the pants of Samantha was a bit cringe worthy and looking at it from the eyes of 2024... a bit on the overly aggressive, borderline "rapey" side. You see the glimpse of redemption followed by the normal teenage boy reaction of "I've got the hot girl in my car!" type of vibes you'd expect from that time frame. Look, I was born in 1984, I get it, we said words back then that we don't say anymore and acted a certain way... but damn did it feel like "Farmer Ted" would end up in jail when he got older.
As expected, Jake Ryan and Samantha Baker finally talk outside the church of her sister's wedding and Samantha's dad gives a nodding approval as his daughter is swept away to Jakes house to kiss over a birthday cake adorned with 16 candles... gotta love the subtlety.
Overall, I liked the movie. I can see why people found it entertaining, but man... that film cannot be made again today without a huge shift in creative reimagining.
Sixteen Candles: 4 Tips
Movie Number 4: Spaceballs
Maybe I should have watched Star Wars first? because I feel like this would be the best version of those movies... I'm joking. We shall see soon enough. As I was watching the movie I could only think of the majesty of Mel Brooks movies, that I've heard of in the past. I enjoyed the humor of the movie and felt like it was a movie that aged pretty well, given what we know of movies fro the past not aging well at all. It did feel a little over the top, but thats what those kind of movies do best, just blast you in the face with making fun of themselves and current events.
I found myself wondering, is this the original parody movie? I loved films like "Not Another Teen Movie", "The Comebacks", etc... and Spaceballs seemed to lay the foundation of that type of movie. Make fun of the love scenes, make fun of the current political state (somehow eerily similar to the current climate of today in more than one way), and most of all stick to the script of the movie you targeted to make fun of. I Enjoyed the movie more than I originally thought I would, though the Alien coming out of the man's stomach at the end of the movie and singing "Hello My Darling" was a weird happening in a movie that I don't think needed the scene.
