The Tip List: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

Movies Number 5 & 6: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars: Episode IV

If you're new to the page or to what is going on here, I am watching a list of movies (it will be published soon), that I haven't seen. I grew up a really weird way, and didn't really fall in love with movies the way a lot of people have. Therefore, I am going to finally watch the long list of movies that include the Harry Potter Franchise, Lord of the Rings, any coming of age movie from the 1980's and Star Wars, plus much more. What makes The Tip List? How badly I want the movie to end, how many times I have to check my phone and not watch the movie, how well I enjoyed the movie and overall, the way the movie sticks with me.

Movie Number 5: Raiders of the Lost Ark

I really enjoyed watching this movie and regretted not watching it previously. One thing that stood out to me was the age of the movie. For whatever reason I thought the Indiana Jones series was an early 90's franchise. Seeing this movie was created in 1981, made me wonder about the basic things like CGI and how different the times were back then for special effects.

Setting aside my recency bias, I dived into this movie. I wasn't aware that is was set in a pre World War 2 era and the historical inaccuracies kinda had me overthinking but I was able to easily suspend belief once the movie got going. From the beginning to the end, the movie had a great storyline. Sometimes, what I've noticed with older movies, is a disconnect when they get closer to the end, I assume because of budget issues, but none the less, Raiders of the Lost Ark, didn't have anything lost in their story arc... man that was cheesy, but oh well... that's just me.

Overall, I couldn't find anything I didn't like in Raiders of the Lost Ark, despite watching a Big Bang Theory episode where Amy "ruined" the movie for Sheldon by saying that Indiana Jones didn't have an impact on the ending of the film. The Nazi would have all had their faces melted either way. If anything Indy made himself a liability and almost got the love interest in the movie killed by his recklessness.

Movie Number 6: Star Wars: Episode IV

Maybe it's just me. Maybe if I had watched it back then, or earlier in life or maybe if I hadn't heard people hype this movie up so much, maybe just maybe, I would have liked it.

I am not too sure what it is, but I cannot stop fighting the urge to sleep when I watch this movie.

So what did I do? I stocked up on caffeine, popped fresh popcorn, had a good cold drink ready to go and dove into the movie I felt would be the hardest watch for me. I kept my eyes open the whole time, checked my phone as sparingly as possible and was forcing myself to watch the movie as best I can. I paused the movie a few times to see how much time was left and at one point I got upset seeing there was still 26 minutes left. I had to get up, splash some water on my face and pressed play once again. I dozed off and caught myself. Rewinded the movie and started over from where I last remembered watching. I really tried to miss nothing in this film.

It was just so damn boring to me. I'm sorry to those who love these movies and I apologize for my ignorance on it. But it felt like the movie was more about the Droids than it was anything to do with Luke, Han Solo or any other thing... until the end.

Previously I had watched Space Balls and I am glad I saw it before I saw Star Wars: Episode IV, because I would not have watched it. Star Wars: Episode IV has to be one of the worst and hardest watches I've ever had to suffer through. I've been told that this is one of the harder watches in the franchise and that gives me hope in the future, but I will not ever watch this movie again.
