If you know me or you've listened to "The Tipping Point" or "Fire and Ice" you've heard me say that there is an enormous list of movies I haven't watched. This summer, I have decided to tackle this list and make an effort to watch movies that I have either ignored or just haven't had the time to watch.
Movies Series and Epics like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, any Super Hero Movie, along with the 80's coming of age movies, the Action Movies that defined generations and a whole group of movies that for some reason or another, just did not resonate with me.
Movie Number 1: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone".
I had never read the books, didn't do any research, just watched the movie. Perhaps the book would be a little more enjoyable?
The build up of the movie was fun. However, the start where Harry is left with his "muggle" Aunt and Uncle, to the moment he is called to go to Hogwarts, seemed like it could have been sped up just a little. The action in the middle of the movie was really good, I appreciated finally understanding what the hell Quidditch is. I enjoyed how the movie kept my interest for the most part. I appreciated the storyline and the ability the movie had to keep me guessing on what would happen next... at least when it came to the ending of the movie. The antagonist was not who I initially thought it was, so that was a refreshing change. Overall I am looking forward to the next movie... if anything my only major issue would be how long the movie is... it felt like it took FOREVER and could have been sped up somewhere.
Movie Number 2: "The Breakfast Club".
The quintessential, 80's coming of age movie. I had seen clips, but it never really made me want to watch it. Finally, I took the time to watch the movie from beginning to end. Perhaps it's watching the movie at an older age where it did not resonate with me the way that it did with the people who got to watch it as children. I felt like the acting was WAY too heavy handed and the messaging of "I don't want to be like my parents" was a bit too exaggerated. While I can certainly appreciate the battle between children and their parents, it makes me remember that we all have issues that shape and mold us as we get older. Younger me can relate to the spirited back and forth that the kids had in the library explaining their inner anguish, the older version of me felt like it was just a ton of blaming their parents for their mistakes.
Maybe that is the duality of the movie?
It felt like it took longer than Harry Potter while being a full hour shorter in run time. I like the movie as a whole, it just felt like it was an unrelenting barrage of predictability and one note storyline.
The Rankings: Tips
My ranking system will be based off of how many times the movie lost my attention, Made me check my phone, or made me wish it was over.
Harry Potter: 4 Tips
Movie was too long, it was over all enjoyable, I checked my phone twice (in 2.5 Hours) and at no point did it make me wish it was over.
The Breakfast Club: 3 Tips
The movie was heavy handed and one note. I enjoyed some of the banter, but I found myself checking my phone more than 5 times. At one point I found myself thinking "When does it end?" I used my son coming into the room to ask a question as an excuse to pause the movie and look at the remaining time.
